FULL RENOVATION OF A DUPLEX IN EL ENCINAR DE LOS REYES

Spaciousness, light and flexibility for a new family stage

Functionality, warmth and spatial continuity.

Full renovation of an approximately 250 m² duplex home located in El Encinar de los Reyes, Madrid.

The owners, Ariana and Fernando, contacted Nala Studio after deciding to purchase the property directly above their own, within a residential development with extensive landscaped gardens. The main floor had a layout very similar to the home they were already living in, but it also included an additional upper floor, giving them the extra space they needed to adapt the property to family life.

During the initial phase of the project, several layout options were studied. Finally, taking into account the family’s real needs, it was decided to keep the main day and night areas on the lower floor, and to completely reorganise the upper floor to include a service bedroom with its own bathroom, as well as a children’s playroom designed with enough flexibility to become a bedroom in the future.
One of the main decisions was to keep the kitchen separate from the living room. Although different alternatives were considered, the owners preferred to maintain this separation while significantly enlarging the living area. To achieve this, one of the three bedrooms on that floor was incorporated into the living room and the corridor was removed, integrating that surface area into the shared space.

This intervention completely changed the perception of the home. The living room gained space, continuity and light, and the property acquired a much more generous scale. In addition, in the staircase area, the ceilings were raised as much as possible, correcting the previously reduced sense of height in that part of the house and improving the visual connection with the upper floor.
The renovation included the complete refurbishment of the kitchen and three bathrooms, the replacement of all flooring — including the stair finish — the full upgrade of the installations, and the design of bespoke wardrobes tailored to the family’s specific needs.

The result is a spacious, bright and functional home, designed to accompany Ariana, Fernando and their children for many years to come. A comfortable house for everyday family life, with well-proportioned spaces, the ability to adapt over time, and a direct connection with the landscaped surroundings of one of Madrid’s most pleasant residential areas.
